Review of Ran (1985) by Martin T — 01 Jun 2010
On previous viewings the performances, particularly Nakadai, rubbed me the wrong way, but now they seem entirely appropriate. Or perhaps I've seen it enough times to become used to it. There are still a couple of moments that feel a bit overdone, but only a couple.
It's easily the best of Kurosawa's post-Mifune films (which isn't actually saying much). Rich layers of Shakespearean drama, heaps of tragedy, a cast of characters who resonate, two hugely impressive battles, scenes that are unforgettable, and one of the most haunting final shots ever.
Truly a masterpiece.
