Review of Ran (1985) by Praveen S — 27 May 2011
Yet another classic from Akira Kurusawa! This is Kurusawa's reimagining of Shakespeares King Lear, which was always one of my favourite of Shakespeares works, so I had been looking forward to seeing this one for quite a while.
There are some differences from Shakespeares work and this film, but for the most part it was true to original story, dealing with themes of betrayel, corruption, greed, madness and all that good stuff.
Tatsuya Nakadai delivers an incredible performance here, and pretty much displays the entire spectrum of human emotion throughout this film. The cinematography, costumes/set design, music and pretty much everything else was spot on.
My only really critique is that the movie is kind of over long, but I didn't mind at all. Just warning you not to go in to this expecting anything short and sweet. This movie is BIG, but it is worth putting in the time to see it.
A must see.
