Review of Ran (1985) by Ben A — 31 Oct 2011
Probably my favorite Kurosawa film and possibly his best. Though it borrows part of it's story, mostly in the set-up, from King Lear it takes the message and underlying meaning of King Lear much more so.
One of Kurosawa's bleakest films by far, it's nihilism and unflinching questioning as to the nature of man and god is what ultimately makes it a masterpiece. As always Kurosawa deals heavily in imagery and the final shot in particular really embodies the film's message.
