Review of Ran (1985) by John H — 06 Jan 2013
He'd make more movies after this, but RAN is the grand finale to Kurosawa's career, classical and modern in one fell swoop. The story is unapologetically pessimistic (KING LEAR, remember, was always a dark, disillusioned tale of a man realizing his existence has come to naught), and it bears the weight of Kurosawa's years.
The nihilism spreads everywhere, seeping into everyone's bones (living and dead) by the time the film closes. But the existence of RAN itself, with its epic sweep, dazzling color, and fierce emotional power, can fight it - this is a film for the ages.
