Review of Ran (1985) by Johnathon W — 12 May 2015
Classic samurai epic that serves not only as a brilliant adaptation of 'King Lear' but also the last Kurosawa's final masterpiece. The cast is excellent across the board, with Nakadai giving a brilliant performance as Lord Hidetora, who's descent into madness is from not just watching his kingdom fall apart but knowing it was his doing.
The other highlight is Mieko Harada as Lady Kaede, giving one of the great villain performances of film who's thirst for revenge knows no bonds. Behind the camera, Kurosawa perfectly adapts the Bard's classic to feudal Japan, with beautiful details along with some epic battle, which show the brutality of war without glorifying it.
Overall, one of the finest films by the late master, which makes it by default one of the best films ever made.
