Review of Ran (1985) by Hytham E — 18 Feb 2013
I confess I'm not big into Shakespeare. As such, I haven't rightly seen King Lear, the play this film is based on. If Lear himself is anything like Hidetora Ichimonji, I can't rightly call it a tragedy.
Sure the situation itself is tragic, but Ichimonji's war crimes coming back to haunt him and make him pay is more... karmatic than anything else. That said, Ran is a well-executed epic drama, and I will definitely watch it again.
