Review of Ran (1985) by Sammy J — 10 Oct 2010
A breathtaking work of art, this is Akira Kurosawa's mournful take on Shakespeare's "King Lear". Filled with electrifying performances, particularly by the females playing his daughters, this is an exquisitely rendered work.
The cinematography and design are genuinely awe-inspiring. (Japan has a very rich history for this sort of thing, it seems.) Being "King Lear", "Ran" is a very bleak film, and mirrors Kurosawa's own feelings at the end of his life, but - provided you're not on a ledge already - it's beautiful in its lugubriousness.
