Review of Ran (1985) by Randy H — 31 Jan 2008
As good as advertised. The "sensei" of film delivers again. Oh yeah, this was made in the '80's. Oh yeah, I have only seen 4 of his movies. Anyway, the liberties Akira Kurosawa takes with Shakespeare's King Lear are perfectly acceptable and possibly necessary to convert to a Japanese setting.
The delivery of every character definitely gave this film a Shakespearian play-like feel -- even in subtitles. Nakadai was awesome as the Lord King. As always in Kurosawa's flicks, the battle scenes were as captivating as any.
I would love to see what he could do with today's technology...but, maybe he did not need it.
