Review of Ran (1985) by Dan N — 21 Mar 2010
In a very humble way I can say, this may be the best movie I've seen in my entire life!
It has took me a very long time to finally watch a Kurosawa movie. So I can't say much about his other films, but if this is not even considered his best... then I've got a lot to be looking for! :D.
As for Ran - it's just perfect. The entire movie is pure perfection. Not one scene is wrongly placed. The cast is amazing. The way Kurosawa combines epic fight scenes with psychological character study is not to outperform. The whole movie is pure genius, and should be remembered as an eternal treasure of the human race!
The old guy - Tatsuya Nakadai - delivers one of the most stunning and most rememberable performances I've seen. Also the rest of the cast couldn't have been better.
Kurosawa's use of music, sound, colors, camera angles, his use of language and symmetry is undescribably beautiful. I find no other words than to call this movie a timeless masterpiece.
Thank you, Shakespeare, for the original! Thank you, Mr. Kurosawa, for one of the best movies in the history of cinema!
