Review of Ran (1985) by David R — 11 Jun 2011
Put simply, one of the best films ever made.
Akira Kurosawa redefines what an epic film is, with breath taking story telling, utterly believable characters and real life (non CGI) battle scenes. Not only this, there are so many subtle themes and messages throughout the film that one can't help but be deeply affected. There's a deep root message of nihilism throughout the piece, laced with anti war messages and questions over morality and family bonds.
The film is an adaption of King Lear, but one would be hard pressed to tell, if they hadn't been informed before hand. Kurosawa makes the story his own, and brings a true masterpiece to the screen in the process. The detail on offer is astounding, little wonder when you realise that Kurosawa spent 10 years painting every scene.
A rare marvel of film making vision and depth; one that will stay with you.
