Review of Ran (1985) by Derek H — 29 Jun 2011
One of the most depressing movies I've ever seen. After watching The White Ribbon, I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of Michael Haneke's personal favorites. The style surrounding every scene with Lord Ichimonji is incredibly long, slow, and burning to the teeth.
If Kurosawa's main intention with this movie was to honestly show Ichimonji's demise of the mind, he's succeeded in a way that can only be seen to prove it. What this means to the viewer is that you will feel completely worn out and like shit when it's over.
It is as honest a depiction of a man going mad over the destruction of his kingdom and family as you'll ever see. The only question is whether you're up to experiencing it.
