Review of Ran (1985) by Brendan O — 08 Jun 2008
Ran is Kurosawa's Othello, his last masterpiece and his final statement as an artist. It is a remarkably compelling and powerful epic that pulls you in and doesn't let you go until you have been completely drained of all emotion and hope for humanity.
It is a transposition of Shakespeare's King Lear, set in feudal Japan: An elderly lord abdicates to his three sons. One son is bold enough to warn the lord of his rash decision and is banished for his disloyalty. The other two sons vie for power and scheme against their father, driving the old man insane.
