Review of Rampage (2018) by Healingtoolbox — 10 Jun 2018
One of the best summer popcorn movies in years. This is what last year's Tom Cruise Mummy was trying for. If you liked San Andreas, this is about equally entertaining, coherent and well done, if unnecessarily intense for young kids. The intensity of it pushes on PG-13 barrier and for no reasons linked to character dev. Many things are done well here. Most astonishing to me is the syntax of summer blockbuster movie making. This team, including star, actors, director, cinematographer (camera framing and movement) have it down. Second most astonishing to me is the seamless VFX. George the ape is brought to life as few digital characters ever have.
Third thing done unexpectedly well was Jeffrey Dean Morgan's performance. His new take on an abrasive foil was welcome. I'm not al all surprised it cleaned up overseas. Not common to see a film with so few missteps given its genre.
