Review of Rampage (2018) by Greg C — 13 Apr 2018
Someone is following the Schwarzenegger action movie star playbook, kinda'. This is a bad movie. This movie has a paint-by-numbers plot and script. Malin Akerman as the villain plays a stock character that could been replaced by any number of actors or actresses spouting the blah-blah lines where they "weaponize" a bad thing and "make billions of dollars".
Our leads are in the middle of such epic destruction that there is no time for romantic chemistry to evolve. Even Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character has an entirely typical and predictable arc. I personally think that there is no excuse for the first two acts of this limp dishrag of a script.
Worst of all, this film doesn't let D-The Rock-J act like I know he can. Then they get to Chicago. There are a sparse and distinct number of redeeming features of this movie. 1. The Rock's charisma 2.
The shot of the gator emerging from the river. 3. The number of characters who would normally survive way too long, who ... don't. 4. Real jump scares 5. JD Morgan is ultimately appealing. 6. The chemistry between Dwayne Johnson's character and a CGI ape.
This is no modern Planet Of the Apes movie, but George's (the ape's) use of sign language brings a humanity to the relationship that nearly redeems this dumpster fire.
