Review of Rampage (2009) by Justin H — 14 Jul 2010
I want to make two things clear, starting off: First, this movie WAS produced, written, and directed by Uwe Boll. Second, I have not in fact taken leave of my senses. Somehow, against all the odds, Uwe Boll has made a movie that's actually pretty decent, bordering on being quite good. And that's not even in comparison to his other films; "Rampage" is watchable on its own merits.
True, you could call it a ripoff of "Falling Down," with a less sympathetic main character, and maybe a bit of "Severance" thrown in for good measure. But the overall story, derivative though it may be, is solidly told, with pretty good cinematography, decent pacing, and some well-executed dark humor. And despite the deceptive straightforwardness of the narrative, there's a layer of subtlety worked in that speaks to Boll's evolution as a director.
I never thought I'd say this about one of Uwe Boll's films, but I honestly enjoyed this one for all the right reasons. And part of me is actually looking forward to seeing what he comes up with next. So, to anyone who might be reading this, give "Rampage" a shot; you might be pleasantly surprised.
