Review of Ramona and Beezus (2010) by Jonna V — 27 Dec 2010
Granted, the first 10 minutes of the movie left me and my family cringing and wondering if we had accidentally rented a little kids movie. But the rest of the movie more than made up for it - it was so fun tripping down memory lane with Ramona and Beezus.
I distinctly remember reading these books as a kid and many of the scenes in the movie (the toothpaste scene, Mr. Quimby handing his girls a white bag of gummy bears after losing his job, the suitcase scene) stand out vividly in my mind all these years later.
It's always hard to translate a book into a movie, but I think they did an admirable job of bringing the story to life. I think the only thing that was missing is Ramona's thought process as she does things - I really liked those parts of the books and always thought that Ms.
Cleary did a great job of explaining the world the way a child would actually think (ie: Ramona's secret desire to squeeze an entire tube of toothpaste or to pull Kleenex from a tissue box at abandon).
