Review of Rambo III (1988) by Rob A — 22 Sep 2014
Looking back historically, this is one strange movie! All of Rambo's wars are lost causes....that's so sad. If only they'd write a script about something like that instead of about all the things that would make Stallone look hardcore.
Rambo Part 2 & 3 are "war fantasy" pictures. It's strange to think that in the 80s people seem to have accepted these Herculean caricatures for lead characters. Then again, James Bond is still going strong. I can accept that stealth & surprise are powerful, and there are superhuman warriors out there, but...
This one was visually impressive even more than the previous one, and at times I felt it was legitimate in ways the previous cartoon-ish movie wasn't. However, there's so little dialogue that it doesn't involve the viewer and repetitive -- Rambo sneaks around, kills a guy, sneaks around, kills a guy.... It's a mystery to me who these are meant for.
But I give them credit for a strong effort. I can't believe it was the most expensive movie ever (a third of it went to Stallone) but there is some good military action.
Sure am surprised that the first was great and the sequels aren't, but maybe I shouldn't have been.
