Review of Rambo III (1988) by Katrina L — 07 Aug 2009
It felt like something went missing in between the previous effort and the third chapter. What I do like is that this movie's never boring. It moves at a very quick pace and the action here is still very exciting.
Sylvester Stallone still wins as Rambo and Richard Crenna is still good as Trautman. In the first two movies Trautman usually has to come in and save Rambo. In this chapter, it's vice versa. That was an interesting twist.
Peter MacDonald kept it moving quick enough and gave some interesting shots (especially in the underground scenes). It also has an underlying message via the war in Afghanistan which was appreciated. It's just that this one went a little too far in terms of portraying Rambo as a Christ-like figure.
The action, although awesome, gets really over the top at times (especially towards the end). The lines also get really terrible here. Rambo and Trautman have to spit out some really bad one liners here.
They also went lame when they decided that a little kid would make a good sidekick for Rambo. Stupid move! Lastly, the middle section lags on and hurts the movie. I still don't think this one bad.
It's got a lot of action, a lot of Rambo and that's pretty much what I need to guarantee a good time. It's just that this one made the series lose its spark really fast. For true Rambo fans only.
Others should stick with First Blood or Saving Private Ryan.
