Review of Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) by Steve D — 18 Aug 2008
"Do we get to win this time?". In the original novel upon which Rambo was based, John Rambo died at the end. Thank goodness the makers of First Blood decided to ignore this, or we wouldn't have had Rambo: First Blood Part 2, one of the purest, most adrenaline-pumped, machismo-laden action films of all time.
Eschewing much of the political subtext of the first film, First Blood: Part 2 is concentrated purely on death, destruction, mayhem and the killing of as many Gooks as possible! (I mean that as an ironic statement.
People of Vietnam, please don't take offence.) Stallone grows into his role, angrier, meaner and more pumped than ever, while Richard Crenna returns, and Charles Napier takes over from Bryan Dennehy as the bureaucratic pencil pusher who will undoubtedly get his comeuppance.
Great fun throughout, with action throughout, explosions, helicopters, and a bow and arrow, Rambo First Blood Part 2 is pure action porn. yum yum.
