Review of Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) by Dorian F — 15 Dec 2018
I adore the first film with it's nostalgic references to the golden era of gaming, which I lived through as a child. So why did the scriptwriters have to fill the sequel with overt political messages? We certainly have stuff to sort out in the world at the moment, and it's not so much that I disagree with the message, but it's too frequent and too heavy-handed in a film that's supposed to be just fun. Also results in questionable character development, where Ralph repeats the similar mistakes to the first film (but much worse) just to drive the story along, and get across that message.
I've seen articles online which say it's Disney trying to make amends for telling weak-woman/strong-man stories for decades, or John Lasseter trying to atone for his behaviour. Worthy, but not in a fun film about video game characters.
