Review of Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) by Patrick C — 02 Dec 2018
The first rule of Internet is: you do not talk about Internet. That is, unless you want for it to age and feel outdated with a speed of light. By the time I saw it in cinema, some internet scenes were already quite cringy.
Seeing memes, I normally enjoy, in that movie felt weird. It was also so bombarded with commercials [ebay, twitter, etc etc] that it made the movie itself look like one big advert. At some point I end up starring blankly at the screen and actually wondering what is the plot itself?! Surely not just buying the wheel itself!? But then the finale arrived with uncanny valley giant ralph made from tiny ralphs that kept moving and writhing to form the larger version of themselves and I genuinely felt like I have enough and was ready to walk out from the cinema.
It was just so weird to see THAT and for Ralph himself to be THAT obsessed. I think the cherry on top was the last scene when they parted their ways. Because let's be honest, it didn't feel at all like two friends giving each other space.
..it felt like they parted their ways to live their own two separate lives. Long distance friendships barely ever work. The second movie made Venellope look egoistic and [actually going turbo as she ditched her own game to be part of another.
..which is IRONIC] and it made Ralph cringey/creepily clingy which should be avoided considering the age gap between the characters. Fair enough if he was protective but...unfortunatelly he come across as questionable individual.
Sadly, all that is written comes from someone who loves the first, original movie. WIR is one of my personal favourities. Now I wish I never saw the sequel as I wont be able to see these characters the same way again.
