Review of Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) by Squarez P — 02 Dec 2018
Wow. Just...wow. Where do I really start?
GOOD -.
- Fantastic animation, which has become a staple of Disney/Pixar animations.
BAD -.
- Utter lack of real story. Yes, there *is* a story here, but if you were to boil out all the gimmicks and product placement, the movie would only have a run time of around 30 minutes (it's 2 hours long).
- Lackluster performances. I love all the performers in this movie as actors and actresses. Each has done incredible voice work in the past, especially in the first "Wreck-It Ralph." Here, the performances just feel flat, as if even the performers themselves realize the fact they're acting in one, long commercial. The lack of character to these characters only serves to hinder any real "bonding" that any of the characters share with one another, resulting in just an overall boring presentation punctuated with flashing lights and pretty CGI.
UGLY -.
- This feels like a big-budget straight-to-DVD release.
- Disney/Pixar forgot all of the reasons the first film was such a huge success. It capitalized on nostalgia and perfectly blended a touching story of the building of an unorthodox friendship between generations. The first film poked cheeky fun at retro video games and the large gaps between where we've been to the point of where we are now, but the sequel instead delves more into mockery and jabs that result in an overall deadpan delivery.
Who will like "Ralph Breaks the Internet" -.
- Hardcore Disney/Pixar fans who have to see EVERYTHING these studios release lest they crumble into dust and return to the Earth.
- People who love top-notch CGI.
- People who hate Disney/Pixar and want definitive proof that these media titans can fail from time to time.
What to watch instead -.
- "Wreck-It Ralph" on loop to sanitize your brain after seeing this train wreck.
