Review of Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) by Joseph D — 21 Nov 2018
They managed to show us the 'net without all the adult content, I'm impressed!
RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET.
At just under 2 hours, this is a solid follow up to the original. We get right into the action, the story flows at a good pace, & the payoff is satisfying, but leaves room for another film, which I'm totally on board with!
The cast once again knocks it outta the park! John C Reilly & Sarah Silverman maintain their organic chemistry as friends who've become family, in both the best, & worst ways. Jack McBrayer & Jane Lynch kinda take a backseat this time, but they have their own subplot, & totally shine throughout it. The denizens of the 'net really stood out, both the admin characters, & those of the online gaming world. And then there are the Disney princesses, they were a legit treat to watch. Props to all the returning princess voice actors, they really gave personality to characters who, sadly, some of which, didn't have that much originally, but they made it work!
The visuals are to die for! This is the best realized, if slightly sanitized, visualization of the internet I've seen in a long time. It's a metropolis, with multiple newer layers built on the ruins of past 'net incarnations. It all looked organic, impressive, & believable. Now to address the elephant in the room: as a kid's film, they couldn't very well show just how much porn was actually on the 'net, but that didn't take away from the believability; it had everything else, & felt like a legit representation of the online world.
The music...fit...it just fit. It's mostly background stuff from, like, everything ever, & it was a nice complement. The real surprise was a number that came outta nowhere, but even THAT fit the situation! No spoilers though!
Ralph Breaks the Internet (Wreck it Ralph 2) has everything you need for a good sequel. An organic continuation of the story, a raising of the stakes, action, suspense, comedy, drama, life lessons, imagery that sticks with you. It's worth seeing in any format, just as long as you can see it! 4 stars outta 5, it's surfin' time!
