Review of Raising Cain (1992) by Daryl . — 14 Oct 2008
I'm sure that Lithgow and the rest of the cast had a far better time chewing through the scenery than I did watching it.
RAISING CAIN is just plain goofy. It has to be one of DePalma's weakest efforts as both writer and director.
This film actually contains a vocalized, audible "external monologue" from one of the characters by way of advancing the plot. It's laughable!
Not convinced yet? Don't worry... there's a "dream" within a "dream" within a "dream" within a "dream" scenario for you to sit through too!
I realise RAISING CAIN is an homage to a great number of films throughout Hollywood history and DePalma manages to infuse this picture with his fantastic visual style while honouring those films from the past... but DePalma's"visual style" is pretty much the only redeeming quality in the film.
There are two, genuinely creepy and tension-filled moments in the entire film, (shot ONLY as DePalma could shoot them), but both are rudely and abruptly interrupted by the most ludicrous, most ridiculous, most unbelievably overdone climaxes (possibly) ever committed to film.
Overall... quite a bore despite the obvious, manic yet serious intentions of it's "far-more-talented-than-this-film-illustrates" director...
Watch BLOW OUT instead...
