Review of Raising Arizona (1987) by Nate H — 04 Jul 2010
Overrated. It bored me. The Coens aren't meant for straight-up comedy, I guess, because this movie - though quirky and weird - isn't all that funny. And it's the rare Coen flick where the production design and direction alone don't plug the viewer right into the universe.
They've got the distribution backwards here - in later Coen movies they focus on the criminology and heaviness, subverting it with unacknowledged silliness and absurdity. Here, they focus on the silliness and throw the whole thing out of whack with the violence.
Oh well.
