Review of Raising Arizona (1987) by Alden D — 03 Apr 2012
Serial small time crook and prisoner H.I. McDunnough (Nicholas Cage) eventually decides to go straight, and marries Ed (Holly Hunter), his police photographer. When Ed thinks she can't have children and gets desperate for a family, she and HI kidnap Nathan Arizona Jr, one of quintets recently born to furniture tycoon Nathan Arizona.
This is a rather wonderful film, funny, quirky and oddly moving, with a great cast and superb photography. The dream sequence at the end is as moving as the scenes at the beginning are funny, and the beautiful desolate landscape is well captured.
John Goodman almost steals the show, but everyone is on top form and this film is a classic.
