Review of Raising Arizona (1987) by William B — 30 Jun 2010
I've seen at least three Coen Brothers films from each decade they've been directing for. But I suddenlt realised that I hadn't seen anything from the 80's by them, I'd basically been putting off seeing this film for a while.
SHAME ON ME.
This film just shows that the Coen Brothers cannot be stopped with their weird and wonderful films EVER. Everything about the film screamed Coem bro's:
-Slapstick Humour.
-Very Odd Storyline.
-John Goodman.
Everything just fitted so perfectly together, they even made Nicholas Cage even more well known because of his performance as the following-orders-husband-ex-con which was the core the the entire film.
Hi McDunnough all his life has been a small time convict doing sentences of 12-14 months at a time. Until he meets the policewoman of his dreams Ed, and he decides to change his act for good and settle down with the woman of his dreams and of course have a child.
BARREN BARREN! Ed finds out that she's infertile and can't have a child. So what does the couple do? They steal a baby!
This follows up with main memorable characters from the prison duo to the biker from hell and of course it's the Coens so you've got to have violent humour...
This film is a great example of how the Coens begun their career. Blood Simple (1984) may have been a rocket but Raising Arizona was the fuse being lit be a flamethrower being used by Jack The Ripper that's how much this film helped the bro's career as a whole.
We've all seen Fargo, The Big Lebowski and No Country For Old Men and without Raising Arizona there wouldn't even be a Barton Fink (Thank god I watched it then).
5/5.
