Review of Raising Arizona (1987) by Timothy K — 19 Feb 2011
A surprising change in tone for the Coen's second film, with manic humour and a big dose of sentimental sympathy for hapless H I and barren Ed being at the forefront. The Coens gift of the gab shines already, with many precise and mannered word puns and pronunciations, they get as much comic mileage out of language and accent as they do from fat men screaming.
The finale becomes increasingly absurd when H I must battle the apocalyptic Leonard Smalls, biker from hell...or a Mad Max set. Hunter and Cage have never been better, this comedy may go off the rails but it is brimming with confidence and very funny performances.
The Coens make their mark with a very unique and varied comedy, one of the hardest genres to get right.
