Disturbing as it is beautiful, my Western eyes found issues of class and household dynamics singularly alien.
Zhang Yimou creates imagery that makes you ache; makes you long for feelings that you may never experience, let alone are able to name.
This is my favorite of his many great films.
At the time of this movie's release, Gong Li was named the most beautiful woman in the world? a fact that was more than equaled by her performance here and future career.
