Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Burton D — 19 Sep 2007
Extremely effective directing from Zhang and the ensemble cast help make this one of the unsung masterpieces of the 90s. Not a moment is wasted from the first frame to the last. I'm surprised this even got made given the obvious themes of oppression and confinement by something that looks so beautiful but leads to a dark place.
