Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Jelyne H — 22 Oct 2007
A beautiful tragic story that gives you glimpses into old China. The colors and changing seasons were extraordinary as was the acting of each woman. It clearly portrays what having multiple wives/concubines can do for women.
The jealousy, anger, bitterness, rage, emptiness. It was very interesting to see how the culture was in the past. How business was conducted, games were played, maids worked, etc. Altogether, just a very interesting film where brilliant performances were not lacking.
