Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Robert H — 25 Oct 2007
The critics called it Zhang Yimou's allegory to the communist China but he vehemently denied it.
The story of wives struggling over the attention and favour of the master is heartbreaking.
Apart from its splendid story, one couldn't set aside the brilliant cinematography and the soundtrack. Thanks to the new DVD version, the colours and richer.
I was so overwhelmed I could feel the snow flakes falling on to my skin.
I wonder why Hollywood couldn't make movies like this.
