Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Tapoja C — 04 Nov 2007
Unlike Zhang Yimou's other movies, this one is less orientalist in nature. Set within the courtyard of a rich man, this depicts the sexual politics amongst five women who vie with each other for the favor of the 'master'.
Though sometimes it can be melodramatic, it is pretty good. Gong Li was a pleasure to watch.
