Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Ken L — 17 Nov 2007
I watched this movie twice consecutively on Laser Disc during my school days back in Australia. Adapted from Su Tong's book of the same title, the movie tells a story of 1930's polygamist household of 4 wives and one master.
Zhang Yi Mou cleverly disguised the face of the the master on soft focus through out the movie. All the charators in the movie are well casted and faithfully developed. I particularly like the sound of the foot massage and love so many scenes; the lighting of the red lanterns scenes, the opening scene, the roof top scene where Gong Li exchanged conversation with the 3rd wife.
The movie truly put chinese in the league of cinematography. Nominated for Oscar best foreign picture but didnt win. Gong Li delivered her best in her acting career in this movie along with Farewell My Concubine.
