The bright red lanterns stand out sharply from the grey, muddy and miserable background - the feudal society. We can never see the face of the master, just like others could never have a clear mind of what had happened in that courtyard house, in that country.
No matter how bright the red lanterns try to be, they could hardly unveil the hidden truth.
