Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Luke P — 01 May 2008
The set design for "Raise the Red Lantern" is beautiful and yet claustrophobic, as was intended. There is a lot to like here, and I could recommend it on a number of grounds. Great characters, beautiful cinematography and sound editing, and a powerful commentary on rebellion, and the complications it can bring to the ethics of a woman in early twentieth China, where polygamy was still a common cultural phenomenon.
