Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Chris S — 06 Dec 2008
Songlian feels nothing and doesn't care anymore about getting her husband's attention as it brings the worst out of all of them. This melodramatic and tragic film in some ways shows how women have been oppressed by tradition and culture.
Zhang Yimou, who is more well-known for his wuxia films, specializes more in human drama but he sure does know how to attract his audience with color and beautiful imagery.
