Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Jessica Y — 15 Aug 2009
When watching this oscar-nominated film you must notice the artistic beauty of it. placing everything so is important for zhang yimou. for example, the master/husband is always placed with nothing blocking our view of him as another reviewer has noticed in the film.
the storyline is basically a girl who marries this rich businessman and becomes his fourth wife. As a concubine, she quickly learns that there is cold blood competition amongst the wives. it is when the competition becomes more heated than ever and when a concubine accidentally spills a secret that we see the film spiraling into a tragedy and perhaps a fate that leaves the audience wide-eyed in awe.
