Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Eduardo C — 27 Oct 2009
Two minutes into this film when I see tears streaming down both of Gong Li's eyes, I am already aware I am watching a masterpiece. This film shows how cruel and brutal life used to be for the Chinese woman, especially if she was the property of a very rich man.
Zhang Yimou in a stroke of genius shows us the master but never completely in order to show contempt for his character. Of course this film was banned in China when it came out in 1991.
