Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Narges M — 24 Nov 2009
People who don't watch this are missing out on an exeptionally wonderful film which is beautifully shot and have great performances, particularly from the charismatic Gong Li.
It's a film that shows the hard life for women in 1920s China through the tension and rivalry between a wealthy man's four wives. A very unfamiliar and disturbing environment, where things are not what it seems at first glance.
Another masterpiece by Zhang Yimou, and greatly recommended.
