Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Cynthia S — 02 Oct 2010
A sumptuous masterpiece with an absolutely brutal emotional impact, 'Riase The Red Lantern' is one of those all-too-rare period dramas which truly feel organic and involving despite it's obvious aesthetic detachment.
Slowly, but surely, Zhang Yimou's films drags you into it's powerful grip, and once you are in too deep to escape, the film displays it's true power. A beautiful, well-acted, sensationally directed, and disturbing motion picture, 'Raise The Red Lantern' is ultimately one of the best films of the 90's, as well as in all of World Cinema.
