Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Christopher P — 02 Jan 2011
Nominated for the Academy Award in '92 for Best Foreign Language Film, this film may very well be one of the best pictures ever made in any language. Set in 1920's China, Songlian has just become the fourth concubine of a very wealthy Chinese man.
Don't want to give a moment of the plot away, so simply put, amazing direction, acting, and the tight camera angles make this vast Chinese mansion feel like the very comfortable prison it is. Not one single close-up of the male leads face the entire movie helps focus the film on the very strong female cast.
6 stars.
