Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Kaewta K — 15 Jan 2011
The lust for power instills in many people's mind from the past up until now. Everyone craves for power and wants others to subdue.
The master overpower his wives. The suppressed wives try to get attention from the master in order to gain more power among women which leads to a tragic end for those who don't obey the (men's) rules.
The narration is still and cold but along with the great cinematography, it portrays the fate of all these poor women well. Even though we cannot see the master's face clearly, we can feel his demanding power over others and how selfish he is quite clear.
Also, Gong Li did a great job throughout the film.
