Review of Raise the Red Lantern (1991) by Evan K — 22 Feb 2011
I like this film but it seemed too short. Unlike Kaige, Yimou relies on more spectacle and leaves less room for politics, this is more apparant in later work but at times this movie suffers a little from such appraoch.
I love his cinematography he uses here, it reminds me of Yellow Earth but more defined in meaning. I love Chinese cinema because of the play between hiding and expressing all the complex meanings, yeaaah!
