Well it's true, the story is a one liner but what we see here on fine acting of both Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman is over the moon. A very touching film that shows exactly how hard it is to communicate with people suffering from Autism although suffering is the wrong term as it is mainly the close family that is suffering from the inability of the person to show emotions.
Well observed, written and acted.
