Review of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) by Luke N — 25 Aug 2013
Still cited by many as the greatest action/adventure ever released, I can only say I'm happy that something as purely excellent as this should still win so much admiration. One tends to forget just how ground-breaking this film was at the time - nor how much it has been imitated by other movies since.
Spielberg and Lucas (two amazing contributors to modern cinema) teamed up together to create what they considered their own, better version of James Bond ... and the rest is history. Raiders is simply the perfect movie, serving great and gratifying action sequences, set-pieces, acting, comedy, grossness and terror.
With the help of John Williams' iconic music, this film is basically a sacred artefact itself - something few filmmakers have been able to get their hands on since - that being a film that works more like a conveyor belt, providing ever-increasing plates of perfection.
This was also followed by two just-as-great sequels. (Notice I only mention two).
