Review of Raging Bull (1980) by M H — 27 Nov 2012
Originally I rated this 4 stars but after reading the book I had to lower it. Don't get me wrong, De Niro and Pesci knocked it out of the park, but once I sat down after seeing it I began to realize that I really didn't like the film.
Not only that, I realized that a lot of things made no sense. For instance, La Motta is a violent man right? I'd like to know why, if possible. I know some men are just like that but with him there was clearly much more to the story and this is where the book comes in.
I'm not going to go on a spiel saying "The book is better than the movie", no. I'm just going to say that a lot of things that you may have wondered about in the film, such as why he's so violent, are cleared up in the book.
The movie skipped over so much of the back story that it missed many crucial events in La Motta's life and, in turn, you may find yourself not only not liking the man but also wanting a bus to run him over.
The book, at least, shows you more about him and allows you to get to know him better.
