Review of Raging Bull (1980) by Seth Y — 25 Mar 2013

I wish I could give this a 10 star rating. I never thought I would watch another boxing film that was on the same level as "Rocky." I won't say that "Raging Bull" is better, but it's just as good. A true masterpiece in every sense of the word and one of the greatest films ever made.

This is Martin Scorsese's brutal character study of Jake LaMotta, a middleweight boxer from New York who is violent both in and out of the ring. Although considered an elite boxer, LaMotta struggled with rage, jealousy and a variety of other demons that eventually led to his downfall.

Robert De Niro is truly one of the greatest actors in cinematic history. His performance as LaMotta is truly legendary, winning him the Best Actor award at the 1980 Oscars. He is so believable, truly capturing the character and his life. It's also amazing to see how he put on nearly 70 pounds to portray LaMotta after his career was over. Not only is De Niro incredible, but Joe Pesci as well in the role of his brother, Joey. Just perfect acting performances all around.

And what else can be said about Martin Scorsese that hasn't been said a hundred times before? Truly the greatest filmmaker to ever live. I can't believe it took me so long to sit down and watch this. Just another flawless film that can be added to Scorsese's long list. I cannot praise "Raging Bull" enough...it's simply amazing. 5 stars.
