Review of Raging Bull (1980) by Kyle H — 22 Jun 2014
Arguably the greatest Scorsese picture, Raging Bull is a phenomenal piece of art. The cinematography deserves multiple Oscars, as does Robert De Niro, who portrays former real-life boxer Jake La Motta so well that it's almost frightening.
La Motta blows more punches (both physical and metaphorical) to his family than he does real punches to his opponents in the ring. He is not very likable but very relatable, for every man has acted like a moronic, overprotective jerk at some point in his life.
Other than Taxi Driver, no Scorsese movie gets more personal than this.
