Review of Raging Bull (1980) by Jonathan P — 18 Sep 2011
I laugh at people trying to compare this to Rocky...Rocky is 100 times better. This is more a character study of a self destructive boxer (Jake La Motta) and though the acting is great (Pesci and De Niro are fantastic) the movie has no one to cheer for, no one to grasp a hold of and even though La Motta becomes somewhat redeemed it isn't enough for us to believe he has changed.
If you are looking for a boxing movie check out Rocky if you are looking for a downer drama with superb acting than Raging Bull would be the way to go as there is little boxing (even the big championship fight is only one minute long) and not really anyone to cheer for.
